Artist Dorothy Hill Crawford, whose paintings – of the distance and sky of Eastern Colorado as well as other subjects – are enjoyed from California and Washington State to New York, has died at 94. She is survived by her son, Thane Greene, daughter Mardi Crawford, and son-in-law Martin Winston Hatcher; countless former students who learned from her the joy that art and observation can bring; and many friends, extended family, and admirers. Her husband, Carroll Knight Crawford, with whom she shared nearly 62 years of interest in “the wider world” as well as daily life and love, died in 2010. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Arthur and Daisy Hill, whose love of music Dorothy shared; a still-born brother, Andrew; and a beloved sister, Lola, who died when Dorothy was 5.

No public memorial service will be held. Those wishing to honor Dorothy’s memory may consider supporting the arts in their local public schools, art leagues, or other organizations encouraging creation and enjoyment of art. Dorothy was a charter member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC.

Anyone with photographs they are willing to share that show Dorothy’s art displayed in their homes or other locations where it could be enjoyed, and/or notes about how her art affected their lives, are encouraged to send them (noting permission to publish) to Mardi Crawford, 28 Elm Street, Albany NY 12202.

The family thanks Dr. Wayne Hoppe and his staff, the staff at The Legacy in Burlington where Dorothy stayed for some time, and the staff at Grace Manor Care Center, where she was at the time of her death on January 19, 2017, for their compassion and care. Baucke Funeral Home is directing the service.
