Wynona Carolynn Baker Brown, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully with family nearby, on October 2, 2024, at the age of 94, in her room at Regent Park Nursing Home in Holyoke, Colorado. Born on April 25, 1930, in Grant, Nebraska, to Lonnie and Ferne Kuskie, Wynona was a vibrant spirit who touched the lives of everyone she met.
Wynona was the cherished sister to Barbara, Virginia, and Roberta, and the devoted mother of four: Danny Joe, Cheryl Lynn, Londa Joy, and Kimberly Dawn. Her family grew with the addition of 14 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom held a special place in her heart.
On August 1, 1946, Wynona married Joseph Jefferson Baker, with whom she shared a life filled with love and laughter until his passing. In 2000, she found love again with Hobart Brown, marrying him on September 9, and embracing his family of eight children as her own; Charlene, Emajo, Nancy, Tom, Vicki, Beverly, Bob, and David along with 24 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren, and 39 great-great grandchildren. Wynona's ability to create family bonds extended far beyond blood; she welcomed each person into her heart and home with open arms.
Throughout her life, Wynona was dedicated to her work in nursing, serving in various capacities at hospitals in Grant and Ogalalla, Nebraska, as well as Phillips County Hospital in Holyoke, Colorado. She later became an office nurse for Drs. Gregory and Griffith and later for Dr. Chesnut and Dr. Ensz. Her caring nature also led her to manage the Longbranch Condominiums in Breckenridge and own the Burge Hotel and Jona’s Coffee Shoppe in Holyoke. Wynona’s commitment to her community was unwavering, and her laughter and kindness left a lasting impact on those she served.
Wynona had a zest for life that was contagious. She loved singing, gardening, cooking, and sewing, often creating special items for her family. Her playful spirit was evident in her love for pulling pranks and making others laugh. She found great joy in helping others, whether through her work or by simply being a source of support for those around her.
Wynona's education journey began at Perkins County High School, where she completed the 10th grade before earning her GED alongside Joe on December 10, 1970, from Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado. This accomplishment was a testament to her determination and desire for lifelong learning.
As we remember Wynona, we celebrate a woman whose legacy of love, laughter, and service will forever be etched in our hearts. She taught us the importance of following the Lord, of family, community, and the simple joys of life. Her spirit lives on in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who carry forward her values and warmth.
A celebration of Wynona's life will be held on Saturday, October 26th, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Holyoke, CO. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Cardiac Rehab and Adult Fitness at Melissa Memorial Hospital.
