Theodore (Ted) Rickard Roos passed away December 28, 2025 at Melissa Memorial Hospital in Holyoke, Colorado at the age of 94 years.
Born July 28, 1931, Englewood, Colorado. Adopted at the age of one month by Rickard and Nettie (Severin) Roos of Haxtun, Colorado. He attended Fairfield Community School and graduated from Haxtun High School in 1949. He was raised in the farming community. He was told he was adopted, but he was their son.
During the Korean War in 1951 he learned he was getting to the top of the list to be drafted in to service. So he and good friend Loren (Pat) Garretson enlisted in the Navy together. They went to Japan together and then were separated. Ted’s first ship was Sausalito PF4; they patrolled the coast of North Korea looking for enemy supply trains and U S Pilots that were in need of help. He was on this ship for 15 months. He then was transferred to the Destroyer Twinning DD540 doing the same thing. He was an engineman, doing maintenance on diesel engines, ships steering equipment, refrigeration, etc… He was on this ship for 14 months. He later was transferred to an ammunition ship Shasta AE6 and went through the Panama Canal. Serving on other ships he saw several countries and also crossed the equator. He always said he liked being in the Navy and had lots of stories to tell. One time his ship was in a storm, the ship liked 2 degrees of rolling over, said he never got sea sick. He was discharged October 1954.
In 1953 he married Geneva Dixon, of Holyoke. To this union was born; Stephen Lee and Linda Kay. After being discharged from the Navy they returned to the Fairfield Area to farm with his dad. Ted continued to farm until his retirement. He also drove school bus for Haxtun School district and worked for Great Western Sugar of Ovid.
In 1981 Ted married Betty (Allen) Powers. They moved to Holyoke, but were still farming in the Fairfield Community. Later they enjoyed some traveling in a motorhome, often taking her parents on trips.
September 2013 he had the honor of taking the Northern Colorado Honor Flight, with Loren (Pat) Garretson, Lester Weers, and Chuck Schmidt. It was an exciting experience and to be able to travel with his Haxtun friends.
Ted never questioned his adoption, saying he had a good life and knew there was a reason. In 2018 he took a DNA test not really expecting to learn anything. Within days he had a response. At the age of 88 he learned he had a brother that was 18 months younger then him. The brother lived within 50 miles of him. Right away they became acquainted. He had also been adopted. This led them to wonder…. So another DNA by private company confirmed they were indeed full brothers. The ball started rolling… a third and fourth DNA was taken, in a matter of
approximately 4 months they found they had 5 brothers and 2 sisters. All had been raised in northeast Colorado. Needless to say it was a surprise to his new found family. Ted & Ken were the oldest of the family. Ted was very excited over his knew family. They had a gathering in 2018. Lots of visiting and continued reunions. He told his story many times, being excited he had met them and they were all very good friends to him.
Ted’s grandsons were very special to him, he was very proud of them. And along came a great grandson named after him.. Hallen Theodore Kafka.
