Sherm Koontz Obituary

M Sherman Koontz (Sherm) past from this world to be with his Lord and parents on Tuesday, Sept 3, 2024 from complications from a very aggressive brain cancer.  He came to us on April 23, 1942 and those that knew him and loved him were so fortunate to have 82 years to be with him here.

Sherm was preceded in death by his mother, Gertrude Sherman Koontz and his father, M. E. (Pete Koontz). I know they were waiting for him to take care of and comfort him.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Cathy Johnson Koontz, his brother Bradford Koontz, sister-in-law Barbara Lipker Koontz, his nephews Brian Koontz and wife Linda, Michael Koontz and wife Sherry and his niece, Monica Koontz and husband Dave.

Sherm was born in Julesburg CO and grew up in Amherst CO, where his father Pete Koontz managed the Amherst Coop Elevator.  He attended Holyoke High and was Jr. Class President. After high school, he attended N E Jr. College in Sterling for two years.

He eventually moved to Chicago where he started a 29 year career with American Airlines.  From Chicago he transfered to San Diego where he met his Cathy, who was also an employee. They married in 1971.

During their careers they also worked in his beloved Colorado Springs and Nashville. He retired in 1995.

Sherm was an avid sports fan and loved major league baseball and college baseball and football. As you can imagine working for an airline, he also loved to travel.  He had a very dry sense of humor and loved to tease those he cared about.
