Ruby Marie Roll’s soul left this earth on the early morning of June 9, 2024 at Regent Care in Holyoke, Colorado and into the arms of her Savior. She was born the second child to Percy and Carrie Blakesley in Natoma, Kansas on March 31, 1925. She had reached the age of 99 years 2 months and 9 days.
By the age of 3 her father had moved the family to Holyoke, Colorado in Phillips County. She attended schools in Holyoke and graduated from Phillips County High School. She learned many of the skills needed to survive at the time on her father’s farm. She milked cows, canned and preserved foods from her garden, but pie baking and homemade rolls were her specialties. She met Robert (Bob) Roll in Holyoke and they were married on January 4, 1945 in St. Francis, Kansas. To this union were born 5 children. Louis, Melvin, (who passed as a 3-day old infant,) Kenneth, Delores Irene, and Marvin. As Bob was a mechanic and he was in the service during the war, they moved to Benkelman, Nebraska to run their Benkelman Implement dealership for a time. However, they soon returned to Holyoke and worked in the shop with Ruby’s father, Percy Blakesley in his implement dealership shop on Sherman Ave. where they built a new home and raised their children. During this time, she also worked for Shew’s Jewelry Store.
In 1970, they moved to Seligman, Missouri where they raised cattle and owned a butcher shop. They lived and worked there while making many friends until Bob’s death in 1988. It was then that Ruby moved back to Holyoke and became a cherished grandmother to her 3 children’s families and 9 grandchildren who lived in the Holyoke area. She returned many times to Missouri to visit Marvin’s family and her friends there. She could be seen in Holyoke walking with her sister Marjorie Roberts and her dog Max, playing cards with friends and her brothers, Bob and Marie Blakesley and Clarence and Vada Blakesley. She could also be seen making quilts and putting her embroidery in special places. As she aged, she lived at Sunset View and Regent Park Assisted Living and the last few months at Regent Park Nursing Home.
She was preceded in death by her infant son, Melvin, her parents, her husband Bob, her son Kenneth, and her daughter Irene and her husband Neal McCormick.
