Richard “Allen” Liming was born on July 9, 1936 in Kirk, Colorado to Neil Graves Liming and Fern Louise (Higgason) Liming . He was welcomed home by his big sister, Rosalie. They lived on a farmstead east of Kirk. Allen started school and then he got Rheumatic Fever in first grade and got set back because he missed half a year of school. Then his big sister and him welcomed little brother, Delbert home. Then they moved west of Kirk and they all welcomed the little sister Cheryl Lee.
Dad talked about riding horses to go to see his friends. They had a small Dairy and up every morning at 4:30 to milk the cows and every night after school. He said they would squirt each other with the milk and get in trouble for wasting the milk.
He loved growing up around all of his Uncles, Aunts, Grandparents and cousins. He loved playing football and basketball in Kirk School. He always talked about Joes being their rivals. In 1955 he graduated with the last class of Kirk High School.
During the summer following his High School Graduation, Allen married Mary Strick in August of 1955. They started out by moving to Denver. Allen worked for Samsonite Suit Cases for four months , it turned out they hated Denver so they moved back to Kirk and he got a job at Kirk Co-op. Then the banker came to him and said “Allen you have to much ability, you should buy Cope gas the propane business.” It was tough gas was eight cents a gallon. He also worked on cook stoves and furnaces. In the evening he worked gathering eggs for his Uncle Jean and Aunt Louise they had a very large chicken coup with lots of laying hens.
As their family started Rodney and Russell were born in Kirk. Then the banker returned and told him he should buy the fertilizer place in Kirk. So they did and moved 1 ½ miles north of Kirk and started out in a little trailer house. Then Roberta was born. During this time they bought some pigs and cows a few at a time. Four years later Robin was born. Mary was the secretary and they filled a lot of ammonia tanks. Allen and Mary employed many people in the Kirk and Joes community.
Allen played softball in the summer, he was a Kirk Volunteer Fireman, and also contributed to the Kirk Golf Course. On the weekends in the summer, mainly on Sunday, he spent countless hours pulling his kids and their friends waterskiing and Allen never got out of the boat. They always took a summer vacation that was the family’s time together with him because he was always working between the Cope gas, the fertilizer plant and his cows and pigs and later farming the ground he had purchased. The farm ground included all of us carrying the pipe all summer to water the crops. Allen never missed any of his kid’s sports.
Allen purchased a Cessna 110 to buy parts with the business and farm. He truly loved flying and it was so fun to sit in the front seat with him and kind of learn the technique of flying. After thirty years in the fertilizer business he was diagnosed with sugar diabetes and the doctors told him that flying the plane was too risky. So he decided to sell his plane and Cope Gas and just farmed and ranched for the remainder of his career.
As the kids were leaving home Allen was on the board for Plains Telephone in Joes and he decided to take up golfing and bowling, he belonged on bowling league in Yuma for many years. He was a Kirk Lions Club member since 1981 where he served as President for many years. Allen was very active in his community. He loved his wife, family, farm, cattle, community and most of all he loved life!!
