Nina Greenfield Obituary

Nina Kay Greenfield was born on March 30, 1944, to Floyd Robert “Hap” Gaines and Stella Clara (Hansen) Gaines and was peacefully called home by God on January 24, 2026.

Nina was the youngest of seven sisters, a role she carried with love and pride throughout her life. She shared an especially close bond with her sisters and cherished them dearly.

Nina grew up in the town of Yuma in a house on Columbus Street. It was a home filled with love, laughter, and family. Some of her fondest memories were gathered around the dinner table, enjoying meals prepared by her mother, who was a wonderful cook. She often told stories of her sister Annie helping her get ready for school by spit-braiding her hair. As the youngest, she wore many hand-me-downs and watched her sisters grow up and leave home one by one. When the house grew quiet, she missed them terribly. During that time, she gained a lifelong best friend in her next-door neighbor, Dale Chaplin—affectionately known as “Bugs.”

Nina attended Yuma High School, where she often joked that academics weren’t her main focus. She preferred enjoying life and spending time with her close-knit group of girlfriends, always finding joy in laughter and companionship.

In 1961, Nina met Eugene Glenn McKie. They were married in 1962 and soon after moved to Sterling, Colorado, where Nina earned her GED and cosmetology license in 1969. Nina and Gene later lived briefly in Tennessee before settling in Denver, Colorado, where Nina worked as a hairdresser.

Together, Nina and Gene had two sons, Steven Eugene and Todd Brian. After 10 years of marriage, Nina and Gene divorced in 1971, and Nina returned to Yuma, Colorado.

One night at the American Legion, Everett Lloyd Greenfield—known to many as “Curly”—asked Nina to dance. That single dance began a love story that lasted a lifetime. Nina and Curly were married on June 10, 1972, and they danced through life together for 42 years, until Curly’s passing in 2013. With the union of this marriage, Nina lovingly welcomed Curly’s four children, Danny, Kathy, Tim, and Phillip.

In 1972, Nina opened her own business, Nina’s Beauty Shop, which she operated out of an addition added to their home on Hoag Ave in Yuma. Over the years, her long-term clients became dear friends. For a brief time, Nina also served as a local mortuary cosmetologist.

Nina later opened a childcare in her home, which she ran for many years. Caring for children was truly her calling, with dozens of kids spending their formative years under her care (some as young as 2 days old!) she was proud to watch them grow up and would brag about them often.

Nina’s happiest moments were spent with family, especially her sisters. On many weekends, they would load up the car late Saturday evening and drive to Denver to spend time together, ordering pizza, drinking beer, laughing, and simply enjoying each other’s company.

Her hobbies included sewing, gardening, collecting Cabbage Patch dolls, and cooking. Nina was famous for her tacos, pies, and Christmas cookies that were so good her Great Niece once hid a bunch of them to have all to herself after the festivities were over. She was passionate about quilting and took great pride in researching and preserving family genealogy. Nina created numerous quilts with a goal of making one for each family member. These quilts are cherished by all who received one.

Nina was preceded in death by those who welcomed her home, her Parents, Floyd “Hap” Gaines and Stella Gaines, her husband, Everette Lloyd “Curly” Greenfield, her sisters, Betty Darlene, Eldene Ramona, Valeda Lea “Teedles”, Phyllis Nevonne, Lonita Jean “Jeannie”, and Shirley Anne “Annie”, and one stepchild, Tim. Nina is survived by her children, Steve McKie and wife Sue, and Todd McKie and wife Michelle, her Stepchildren, Danny, Kathy, and Philip, her Grandchildren, Dylan McKie, Jackson McKie, and Kaylee McKie, 15 nieces and nephews, and 37 Great-Nieces and Great-Nephews.

Hap and Stella Gaines, along with their seven daughters, created a family legacy that spanned nearly a century— from the birth of the oldest sister, Betty, in 1928, to Nina’s passing in 2026. It is a remarkable and enduring Gaines family legacy.

Though deeply missed, Nina’s memory will continue through all who loved her.
