Herbert Richard Pallesen was born on the 28th of July 1930 in the Norwegian community of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York to Helen A. and Herbert T.R. Pallesen. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1948 and Cornell University with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1952. During a year of graduate work, including his undergraduate years as a student, he became an inspector of honeybees for the disease American Foulbrood and was a shepherd at the College of Agriculture. He was employed by Cornell University as Plant Maintenance Supervisor at the N.Y.S. Agricultural Experiment Station, in Geneva, New York in 1954. During his tenure there he helped design and construct the new Food Science Building on the Geneva Campus. In 1977 a position of Statutory Facilities Coordinator was created and filled by Herb at the Cornell University Statutory Finance and Business Office, which gave him the major role of obtaining NYS funding for maintenance and operations, repairs, major rehabilitations and capital construction on the State-funded Colleges (Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, Human Ecology and the Industrial and Labor Relations). Herb retired after 36 ½ years of service at Cornell University in 1988, after which he and his wife traveled extensively.
Herb passed away on December 23, 2023 at the Hillcrest Care Center, a skilled nursing home in Wray, CO.
Herb is survived by his wife Frances Dries Pallesen, his son Richard (Gail) Pallesen, two grandsons, Daniel (Alexis) Pallesen and Johnathon (Bryanna) Pallesen, three great-grandchildren, Taylor Evans-Pallesen, Liliana Rose Pallesen and Andrew Herbert Pallesen, along with three nephews, Peter (Doreen), Kenneth (LeeAnne) and Clifford (Susan) Gabrielsen and their families.
