Shirley Jean Sunderman

Shirley Jean Sunderman was born on August 20, 1935 to John and Doris (Scott) Groshans in Sidney, Nebraska. She passed away on May 27, 2019 at Good Samaritan Village in Grand Island, Nebraska.

Her family lived outside of Gurley, Nebraska where her father farmed. She was the third of four children, Margy, Vernon, Shirley and Bonnie. She was baptized at Salem Lutheran Church near Gurley, Nebraska and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. Paul’s Lutheran in Sidney, Nebraska. She graduated from Gurley High School in Gurley, Nebraska in 1953. On  September 26, 1954, Shirley married Maurice Duane Sunderman at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sidney, NE. To this union, Sandra Ann, David Duane and Stanley Ray were born. Maurice and Shirley farmed near Anton, Colorado from 1956 to 1966. In 1966, they had the opportunity to purchase land north of Otis and establish their own farm. While being a supportive farm wife, Shirley supplemented their income with various secretarial jobs at local businesses and schools. Later, she opened a business in Otis, Colorado called Adaptogs where she designed and sold clothing specially adapted for the physically challenged and elderly.

Shirley loved life especially cooking, entertaining, sewing, singing and dancing. She relished time with family, especially grandchildren and great grandchildren. Shirley was preceded in death by their infant son, David; her husband, Maurice; her parents, John and Doris Groshans; her brother, Vernon Groshans; and her sister, Margy Felzien. She is survived by her children and their families: daughter Sandy (Joe) Armstrong of Grand Island, NE, grandchildren and great grandchildren, Adam Armstrong of Grand Island,NE , Jessica (Bruce) Wagner, Isaiah and Jonah of York NE, and Aaron (Morgan) Armstrong, Annika of Grand Island, NE; and son Stan (Denise) Sunderman, Jennifer (Ryan) Morgan of Loveland, CO., Leslie (Kevin) Mason, Teagan and Cooper, of Merino, CO and Devin (Amber) Hase, Asher and Bentley, of Sidney, NE and her sister, Bonnie (Harold) Schuessler of Cheyenne, WY..

Funeral Services were held on Saturday June 1, 2019 at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Yuma, Colorado, interment followed at the Otis Cemetery in Otis, Colorado.  Pastor Dennis Fitzpatrick officiated the service and Baucke Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
