Sandra Kay Kurtzer, 65, of Haxtun passed away July 9, 2017 in Haxtun at the Haxtun Hospital Extended Care Unit due to complications of Huntington’s Disease. She was born September 20, 1951 in Wray, Colorado to Willard and Shirley (Meyers) Walz. She grew up outside of Wray with her sister Connie and brother Tom. At the age of 17 the family moved to Hot Sulpher Springs for a year and later moved to Haxtun where she graduated from Haxtun High School in 1969.  She married Dick Kurtzer on April 14, 1973 in Las Vegas, Nevada.  To this union, two sons were born, Jared in 1977 and Ryan in 1980.

Sandy loved to help on the farm.  She was happy to make many trips after parts and somehow still make it to the field with a meal for supper. She enjoyed teaching Bible School and Sunday School and teaching her boys about her love for the Lord. She was an excellent seamstress and quilter. She enjoyed making the boys clothes as they were growing up and adding to her fabric stash. She also enjoyed antiquing with Dick. She had an eye for the best stuff and enjoyed collecting dishes and furniture.  She loved watching her grandchildren grow and always gave them the best hugs. She spent many years fighting Huntington’s Disease.  She always had a positive attitude and a fierce sense of determination. She set a wonderful example of how to battle the disease with grace.

Sandy is survived by her husband, Dick; sons Jared and wife Heather and Ryan and wife Brittany; grandchildren Zoe and Otto Kurtzer and Quinn,0 Adley and Charleigh Kurtzer all of Haxtun; sister Connie Asmus of Yuma and brother Tom Walz of Haxtun as well as many nieces and nephews and extended family. Sandy is preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Shirley Walz.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 20th at 10 am at The Haxtun United Methodist Church with Pastor Jeri Soens officiating. Inurnment will be held at The Haxtun Cemetery following the service.  Memorial can be made to The Sandy Kurtzer Memorial Fund. Baucke Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
