James Brophy V Obituary

James Patrick Brophy V was born to James Patrick and Nora Marie Sullivan Brophy on July 3, 1927.  He left us on December 30, 2018, surrounded in prayer and the loving embrace of his daughter, Joni and her family.

“Jim” was the eighth of twelve children.  He was raised on the homeplace twelve miles north of Eckley Colorado.  His family endured the hardships that came with life on the plains, but surrounded by a happy family and good neighbors, Jim was unaware of the hardships his parents faced.

Jim was educated at Sunlit Valley School, Waverly High School, and graduated from Eckley High School in 1944.  After serving his country, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Mae Armagost, in 1948. God blessed their marriage with seven children – Theresa Pearl, James Patrick, Charles Ralph, Nora Kay, Martin Daniel, Maureen Bernadette, and Joni Elizabeth.

Jim and Dorothy farmed north of Yuma, for nearly 45 years, their lives formed by the rhythms of nature and the Church.  They enjoyed golf, travel, and playing cards. They embraced the responsibility of stewardship of the land and of the common good. After moving to town in 1989, Jim continued to “oversee” the farming operations until the very end. His heart never left the farm.

With forty-seven grand- and great-grandchildren Jim was a fixture at games and shows over many states. He was privileged to accept the distinction for Colorado Centennial Farm, for family ownership of the Brophy Homeplace for 100 years.

Jim loved his Catholic faith, visiting longtime friends, and driving to the country to keep connected to the seasons on the farm.  He never missed an Old Settlers, a St. Patrick’s Day party or any party for that matter. We all knew him at different eras of his life, but we would all agree that he wouldn’t turn down a piece of homemade pie, a card game, or a chance to attend Mass.  Active in his community to the end, Jim will be missed by many.

Jim was preceded in death by Dorothy, his wife of 68 years; children Rick, Chuck and Kay; grandsons James Patrick Brophy VII Colwell and Donovan Lanser; his parents; sisters Mary Church, Agnes Lauridson, Judy Veto, Betty Shapard, Loretta Ralph; brothers Tom, Paul, John, Robert and Charles; dear in-laws Pete and Pearl Armagost, Bonnie Newton, Jenon Harouff, Rosalie Morgan, Roberta Armagost, Jean Brophy, Betty Jo Brophy, Patty Brophy, Mary Lou Brophy, Dewana Armagost, Jack Eastin, Ott Newton, Dale Harouff, Howard Morgan, Mervin Armagost, Jack Armagost, Carl Lauridson, Sid Veto, Bob Shapard and Bill Ralph.

He is survived by his brother, Des Brophy; children Theresa, Marty, Maureen and Joe Turney, Joni and Tom Colwell; 22 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 14 first cousins (2 in Ireland), beloved cousins, nieces and nephews and many treasured relatives and friends.
