Evertte Harmon

1925  ~  2017

On July 13, 1925 a baby boy was born to Mabel (Lindsey) and Roy Harmon at home on the farm in Chase County, Nebraska. Roy and Mabel named their first born, Everette.  He grew up on the farm.  He was always a good student especially in math.  He started Imperial High School at the age of 13, rooming during the week with his cousins Ernest and Darlene Hinck.  He graduated from high school in January 1942.  This gave Everette three years before being drafted for World War II.  He made good use of the time, becoming one of the best pheasant shots in the county and finding a gorgeous young blonde named Edna Walcott up the road in Holyoke, Colorado.  Everette and Edna were married April 28, 1945, having eloped to St. Francis, Kansas.  Two weeks later he reported for basic training at Fort Riley, Kansas.  Fortunately the war ended before he completed basic training.  A timely leave at the end of basic training resulted in their first son, Louis.

Discharged from the Army in September 1946, Everette returned to Holyoke where he worked as an electrician’s apprentice and farmhand until renting the Walcott family farm 17 miles southeast of Holyoke in 1950. Son Bill (Willard) joined them in 1951. The family was baptized at the First Christian Church in 1960 where Everette and Edna were active until the end of their lives. After 14 years on the farm, he started a land leveling/excavation business to support the irrigation development in the area.  The successful business allowed Everette and Edna build their own house at 305 S. Sheridan, Holyoke in 1966, doing virtually all the work themselves.  He was noted for his skills as a “scraper jockey”, gardener, carpenter, wood worker, welder and electrician, making him the extended family go-to man for anything that needed fixed.

At the age of 92, Everette went to join his wife Edna in Heaven on September 16, 2017.  He is survived by his brother, Alvin (Cora Mae) Harmon; sons, Louis and Julie, Bill and Sandy; grandchildren Brenda Harmon, Jill Bard (Chris), Jennifer Overland (Brian), John Ross Harmon (Tiffany) and great grandchildren Brooks Harmon, Bracken and Nicholas Overland, and Ethan and Abigail Bard.

The funeral service will be 10:00 Friday, September 22 at First Christian Church 310 South Interocean Ave, Holyoke, CO with interment to follow at the Holyoke Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to the First Christian Church.
