Goldie Marie Gorman (Wise)

July 19, 1924 – March 26, 2016

Goldie Marie Gorman (Wise) was born July 19, 1924 at her grandparent’s (Fred and Mary Korf) farm north of Yuma, Colorado.  She was the eldest of three children born to Lincoln Scott Wise and Lillie Marie Wise (Korf).  Goldie grew up on a working farm – milking cows and raising laying hens and turkeys.  The eggs and thick cream were sold at the Gisi creamery in Yuma each week and the milk helped feed small bucket calves.  Her parents survived many hard times with few conveniences.

Most of Goldie’s elementary education was spent attending Pleasant Hill School.  Since the school was only 1 mile north of her grandparent’s home, she stayed with them while in school.  She walked across the pasture to school with some of her aunts and uncles.  She walked with a freshly baked potato in her pocket – her lunch kept her hands warm.  She did have a Shetland pony that she rode but he had a mind of his own; he would often turn around and run home before she ever made it to school.  She attended Yuma Union High School, carpooling with neighbors.

Goldie experienced the Dust Bowl of the 30’s.  She shared memories of chains attached to car hitches to be drug along the ground to avoid electric shock and memories of wet rags rolled up and tucked in window cracks, trying to keep the never-ending dirt storms at bay.

On December 7, 1941 (Pearl Harbor Day), Goldie married Frank Gorman in St. Francis, Kansas.  They were blessed with four children:  Donna Ilene, Ronald Frank, Janice Ann, and Shari Lee.  Frank was a kind, loving, and thoughtful man who worked hard to provide well for their family.  They built their home north of Yuma in 1953.  Their farm started with dry land crops and raising laying hens and milking cows.  Later, it expanded to include irrigation farming as well as cow/calf ranching.

Goldie enjoyed quilting and sewing all of her life; she sewed most of her clothes and the girls’ clothes in the early years.  There was an aim for perfection in her sewing, needlepoint, embroidery, cross-stitching, and quilting – her daughters recall many a stitch pulled if they weren’t quite up to their mom’s standards.  Goldie knew her way around a kitchen – family always looked forward to a meal at her table.  She also enjoyed oil paints and created many pretty landscapes and floral paintings.

Goldie was preceded in death by her husband Frank of 50 years; their son, Ronald; parents, Lillie and Lincoln Wise, and brother, Richard.

Goldie passed away March 26, 2016 at the age of 91.  She is survived by her sister, Loretta and husband Earl McCall; 3 daughters:  Donna and husband Richard Moran; Jan and husband James Justice; Shari Patterson and partner John Ramirez; 7 grandchildren: Mitzi, Stacy, Dylan, Joel, Ryan, Kara, Cody, and spouses; 18 great-grandchildren:  Brady, Brock, Amanda, Taylor, Madison, Carson, Tylee, Brooke, Quinton, Madalyn, Alaina, Anna, Kayla, James, Aiden, Abigail, Colette, and Colin; and many family and friends.

The Funeral Service was held on Friday, April 1, 2016 at the Community of Christ Church in Yuma, Colorado with Mitch Korf and Sue Mueller officiating.  Interment followed at the Yuma Cemetery.  Baucke Funeral Home directed the service.
