Charlotte Dean (Cox) Mekelburg
December 13, 1942 ~ September 17, 2017 (age 74) 74 Years OldCharlotte Mekelburg, a long-time resident of Yuma, Colorado, passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2017 in her home with loved ones by her side at the age of 74.
Charlotte was born in Stamford Texas to Royce Allen Cox and Velma Corinne (Vaughn) Cox. She graduated from Wichita Falls High School in 1961. She met Roy Mekelburg during a summer that she was visiting her Uncle Bo in Yuma. It was love at first sight and the two married the following summer on August 6, 1961. From this union four children were born, Greg, Jeff, Kevin, and Holli.
Charlotte was known as “Charlie” to her friends. She enjoyed being a farmer’s wife, a homemaker and a mother. She helped run the couple’s restaurants, the Popcorn Shack and Deli and later Popcorns.
Charlotte liked to collect Hummel and Norman Rockwell figurines. She loved to paint, spend time in the kitchen, garden, being a farmer’s wife, and a mother. Charlotte loved to talk and laugh with friends and family, she never knew a stranger. When the Popcorn business was started, she sent popcorn all over the country. She sent some to President Ronald Reagan along with a letter with her concerns about the rural farming crisis in the 80’s. She also sent it to Governor Roy Romer’s mansion in Denver. Her and Roy were invited to the Governor’s Mansion as honored guests where their popcorn was served at dinner.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her Father, Royce Allen Cox, and Mother, Velma Corinne Cox; Infant Brother, Carlton Boyd Cox; and Son, Kevin Mekelburg.
Charlotte will be greatly missed by her husband of fifty-six years, Roy Mekelburg; Twin sons, Greg Mekelburg and wife Julie of Yuma, Colorado; Jeff Mekelburg and wife Dana of Fleming, Colorado; Daughter, Holli Ison and husband Danny of Otis, Colorado; Sister, Cindy Mrugalski of Wichita Falls, Texas; Grandchildren, Casey Mekelburg, Danielle Woods, Brandon Mekelburg, Kelcey Kuntz, Amber Mekelburg-Herz, Kaleb Ison, Kristyn Pinney, and Lydia Mekelburg; Great Grandchildren, Madison Woods, Bryson Woods, Aurora Mekelburg, Creo Mekelburg, and Kooper Kuntz; Loving Caregiver Tonya Erickson; along with other relatives and friends.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the Frist Southern Baptist Church in Yuma, Colorado with Pastor Chris Gilmore officiating. Interment will follow at the Yuma Cemetery. Baucke Funeral Home directed the services.
